Hart's Selected Cabbage Burlap Bag from Springtown, PA
I know I promised a longer post about foundation sill insulation (I know you are very disappointed!) but I wanted to show everyone our latest find from the basement. When we were clearing out above the foundation walls this past weekend we found some old burlap bags. I had seen a corner of burlap hanging down a while ago and hadn’t bothered to see what it was. Well it turns out that it was 3 OLD (100 years or so) burlap bags that had been shoved into the space between the stone foundation and the sill plate a LONG time ago (now replaced with spray foam). Drew gave them a rinse off outside over the weekend. They are still kind of gross but they are really cool at the same time. They are fairly fragile so I’m not sure that they would be able to be framed, but I could always frame pictures of them in the new finished space in the basement. What do you think?
The first one is a 50 lb cabbage bag. The second is a 100 lb potato bag. And the third one is a 167 lb fertilizer bag (I can’t imagine trying to carry a bag that heavy!).

WOW! What a cool find!! I love these so much! I really hope you can find a way to preserve them and frame them, that would be so awesome. If so, would you display them in the basement? Or somewhere else?
Hi Andi! I was thinking of hanging them in the basement, since we are a little lacking in wall space upstairs and I haven’t thought about artwork for down there yet. The only issue I have is that they are quite large, so I would either have to cut a section out to frame or use a photo. I am especially fond of the cabbage so I think I will definitely try and frame it if nothing else.
I’m also partial to the cabbage: the color, the local reference, it is all together wonderful…what a fun find! Thanks for the good reminder of what fun owning a older home can be 🙂
I think it is easy to forget the fun of owning an old home, especially in the midst of a big project. Hey don’t you have a garage attic full of treasures! 😉
Yes, the cabbage one is fantastic. Though the thought of having to use up 50 lbs of cabbage is a bit overwhelming!
Love to see the basement progress. Will need to drop by w/ Neil and see what might be relevant for us… oy.
